Banks Peninsula offers some of New Zealand's most dramatic coastal walking, with ancient volcanic craters, lush native bush, and secluded bays that feel a world away from Christchurch. The network of trails ranges from gentle shoreline strolls to challenging ridge hikes, all rewarding you with sweeping views of the Pacific and the patchwork of farmland that carpets the hills. This is walking country at its purest — expect to share the path with seabirds, fur seals, and the occasional sheep.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most walkers base themselves in Christchurch or Akaroa for 2–4 days. A half-day is enough for a single short walk like Godley Head, but to truly experience the peninsula, dedicate at least one full day to a longer hike such as the Akaroa Summit Walk or a section of the Banks Peninsula Track. If you have four days, the full Banks Peninsula Track is an unforgettable immersion in this wild landscape.
