The Hurunui River carves a wild, braided path through the heart of North Canterbury, its turquoise waters fed by alpine melt and rain. This is a landscape of raw, untamed beauty — where the river rushes through deep gorges, spills over gravel beds, and nourishes the patchwork of farmland and native bush that lines its banks. For travellers on a South Island road trip, the Hurunui offers a glimpse into a less-visited corner of Canterbury, with opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and hiking that feel a world away from the tourist crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Hurunui River Gorge: A dramatic, steep-sided canyon where the river narrows and churns. The gorge is a spectacular sight from the Inland Scenic Route 72, with several pull-offs for photos.
- Lake Sumner Forest Park: A vast tract of beech forest and alpine tussock, crisscrossed with walking tracks. The park offers everything from short nature walks to multi-day tramps, with the Hurunui River as a constant companion.
- Fishing for Salmon & Trout: The Hurunui is one of New Zealand's top salmon-fishing rivers, with a healthy run of Chinook salmon in summer. Brown trout are also abundant. A fishing license is required.
- Kayaking & Rafting: The upper reaches of the river offer challenging grade 3-4 rapids for experienced paddlers, while the lower river is gentler and suitable for family trips. Several local operators run guided rafting trips.
- Waipara Wine Region: Just south of the river, this burgeoning wine region is known for its pinot noir, riesling, and aromatic whites. Many cellar doors offer tastings with views over the vine-covered hills.
Suggested Time to Spend
If you're simply passing through, a half-day stop is enough to admire the gorge and stretch your legs on a short walk. For anglers or kayakers, plan a full day or two — the river's moods change with the light, and the fishing can be superb in the early morning. To properly explore Lake Sumner Forest Park, allow at least a full day for a tramp or mountain-bike ride. The Hurunui is best woven into a wider Canterbury itinerary: spend a night in Hanmer Springs, then drive the scenic route south toward Christchurch, making detours to the river and Waipara wineries.
