Arthur's Pass is a dramatic alpine village straddling the Southern Alps, where the road and railway claw their way through steep valleys and over a high saddle. This is the heart of New Zealand's wild, weather-beaten backcountry — think moss-draped beech forests, roaring waterfalls, and kea (mountain parrots) that will cheekily inspect your car. It's a paradise for hikers and anyone who craves raw, untamed nature.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors experience Arthur's Pass as a day trip from Christchurch (2 hours east) or as a stop on the drive to the West Coast. To truly soak in the alpine atmosphere, spend one night in the village — this allows time for a half-day hike and a leisurely evening watching kea at the pub. If you're a keen tramper, budget 2–3 days to tackle multi-day routes like the Avalanche Peak or the Mingha-Deception.
