New Zealand's highest peak, Aoraki / Mount Cook, towers at 3,724 metres in the heart of the Southern Alps. This is a landscape of epic proportions – glaciers, moraines, and alpine meadows that hum with the sound of cracking ice and kea calls. The air is crisp, the light sharp, and the scale humbling. Whether you're a seasoned mountaineer or a day-tripper with a camera, the village and its surrounds offer a front-row seat to one of the planet's most dramatic mountain theatres.
Highlights & What to See
- Hooker Valley Track – the quintessential walk, an easy 3-hour return tramp over swing bridges and boardwalks to the terminal lake of the Hooker Glacier, with Aoraki reflected in its milky-blue waters.
- Tasman Glacier & Lake – view the longest glacier in New Zealand from the Tasman Glacier Viewpoint (short walk), or take a boat tour among icebergs on the terminal lake.
- Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre – a museum and planetarium that tells the story of the first ascent of Everest by Hillary, who trained in these very mountains.
- Stargazing at the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve – join an astronomy tour or simply step outside after dark for some of the clearest southern-hemisphere skies on Earth.
- Kea Point Track – a 45-minute walk to a lookout over the Mueller Glacier moraine wall, with prime kea-spotting opportunities.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two nights is ideal – one full day allows you to do the Hooker Valley Track in the morning and the Tasman Glacier walk in the afternoon. If you're a keen tramper, add a third day for the Sealy Tarns track or a heli-hike onto the glacier. The village is compact, so you'll have time for the Alpine Centre and a sunset drink at the Hermitage Hotel's bar without feeling rushed.
