White Island

Few places on Earth let you stand on the rim of a live volcano, and White Island (Whakaari) is one of them. This privately owned, active marine volcano rises from the Bay of Plenty about 48 km off the coast of Whakatane. The landscape is otherworldly: hissing steam vents, bubbling mud pools, and vivid yellow sulphur deposits paint a scene straight out of a sci-fi film. Access is by boat or helicopter tour only, and you'll don hard hats and gas masks to explore the crater floor. It's a raw, primal encounter with the planet's geological forces.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for a full day. Boat tours from Whakatane typically take 5–6 hours, including 1–2 hours on the island. Helicopter tours are quicker (around 2–3 hours round trip), but you'll want to factor in travel to Whakatane. The island itself is compact – you can see the main sights in an hour, but the guided walk covers the best spots. Leave time for the boat ride, which often includes dolphin and whale sightings.
