Few places on Earth let you stand on the rim of a live volcano, and White Island (Whakaari) is one of them. This privately owned, active marine volcano rises from the Bay of Plenty about 48 km off the coast of Whakatane. The landscape is otherworldly: hissing steam vents, bubbling mud pools, and vivid yellow sulphur deposits paint a scene straight out of a sci-fi film. Access is by boat or helicopter tour only, and you'll don hard hats and gas masks to explore the crater floor. It's a raw, primal encounter with the planet's geological forces.
Highlights & What to See
- Crater floor walk – Guided tours take you right into the heart of the volcano, past steaming vents and acid lakes. The colours and sounds are unforgettable.
- Steam vents and fumaroles – Watch plumes of steam roar from the earth, some reaching temperatures over 500°C. Stay on the marked paths!
- Acid lake – A vivid green lake of highly acidic water, formed in a crater. It's a striking contrast to the grey rock and yellow sulphur.
- Helicopter scenic flight – For a different perspective, fly over the island and see the crater from above. Some tours combine a landing.
- Birdlife – Surprisingly, seabirds like gannets and shearwaters nest on the cliffs around the island, adding a touch of life to the barren landscape.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a full day. Boat tours from Whakatane typically take 5–6 hours, including 1–2 hours on the island. Helicopter tours are quicker (around 2–3 hours round trip), but you'll want to factor in travel to Whakatane. The island itself is compact – you can see the main sights in an hour, but the guided walk covers the best spots. Leave time for the boat ride, which often includes dolphin and whale sightings.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Rotorua – Another geothermal wonderland, with geysers, hot springs, and Māori cultural experiences. It's about 90 minutes' drive from Whakatane.
- Tauranga – A vibrant coastal city with great restaurants, beaches, and the Mount Maunganui summit walk. Perfect for a pre- or post-volcano chill.
- Mount Maunganui – Climb the iconic volcanic cone for panoramic views of the Bay of Plenty, then relax on the beach or explore the surf shops and cafés.
- Whakatane – The departure point for White Island tours. Spend a night here to explore the town's river walks, museums, and excellent seafood eateries.
