Whakatāne is a sunny coastal town in the Bay of Plenty, where the lush river meets the Pacific. It’s the gateway to the wild and sacred Whakaari/White Island (an active marine volcano), and a hub for Māori culture, fishing, and hiking. The town itself has a laid-back vibe with a compact centre of cafés and galleries, and the surrounding landscape is a mix of farmland, bush, and beaches.
Highlights & What to See
- Whakaari/White Island – Take a boat tour to New Zealand’s most active volcano; you’ll walk on the crater floor among steaming vents and acid lakes (when conditions allow). Book ahead and be prepared for a bumpy ride.
- Ōhope Beach – A long, golden-sand beach perfect for swimming, surfing, or a sunset stroll. It’s patrolled in summer and has a great walking track along the dunes.
- Kōhī Point Walkway – A scenic coastal track from Whakatane Heads to Ōhope, with boardwalks through pohutukawa forest and viewpoints over the ocean and Moutohorā (Whale Island).
- Moutohorā (Whale Island) Wildlife Sanctuary – A pest-free island sanctuary reachable by guided kayak or boat tours; see tuatara, kiwi, and colonies of seabirds. Permits required.
- Te Mānuka Tūtahi – Whakatāne Museum – Learn about the local iwi (Ngāti Awa) and the town’s history, from Māori settlement to the 1867 siege of Pūtauaki.
- Mataatua: The House That Came Home – A beautifully carved Māori meeting house with a fascinating story; it was taken overseas in the 1800s and repatriated in 2011. Guided tours available.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one to two days in Whakatāne. If you’re doing the White Island tour, that’s a full day (including travel and 2–3 hours on the island). Add a second day to explore Ōhope Beach, the coastal walkway, and the museum. You could easily stretch to three days if you also kayak to Moutohorā or hike up Pūtauaki/Mount Edgecumbe.
