Muriwai is a wild black-sand beach on Auckland's rugged west coast, famous for its dramatic gannet colony and powerful surf. The wind howls, the waves crash, and the scent of salt and sea hangs thick in the air — this is New Zealand's raw Pacific edge at its most spectacular. A short drive from the city, it's a favourite for walkers, birdwatchers, and anyone craving elemental coastal drama.
Highlights & What to See
- Gannet Colony Viewpoint: From August to March, thousands of Australasian gannets nest on the seaward cliffs — a cacophony of squawks and swooping birds just metres from the boardwalk.
- Muriwai Beach: A vast stretch of iron-rich black sand, backed by dunes and pounding surf. Swim between the flags in summer, but always heed the strong rips.
- Muriwai Regional Park Walking Trails: Clifftop tracks offer panoramic views from the gannet colony south to the Otakamiro Point lighthouse and beyond.
- Surfing & Kitesurfing: Consistent swells make this a top spot for experienced surfers; the beach also draws kitesurfers when the nor'westers blow.
- Muriwai Lodge: A classic kiwi beachside café and accommodation — grab a coffee and a pie after your walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ample to explore the gannet colony, walk a section of the clifftop trail, and wander the beach. If you're keen on surfing or a longer hike (the track extends several kilometres south), allow a full day. Combine with a visit to Piha or Karekare for a complete west-coast experience.

- Devonport: A historic seaside village on Auckland's North Shore, with boutique shops, cafés, and views of the harbour.
