One Tree Hill (Maungakiekie) is one of Auckland's most iconic volcanic cones, offering panoramic views of the city and its twin harbours. This grassy volcanic peak is steeped in Māori history and crowned by an obelisk dedicated to Māori people. It's a favourite spot for walkers, joggers, and picnickers, with sheep grazing on its slopes adding a bucolic charm right in the city.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Views: The short but steep walk to the top rewards you with 360-degree views of Auckland, from the Sky Tower to the Waitematā and Manukau harbours.
- Obelisk: The stone monument at the summit, erected in the 1940s, is a memorial to Māori people and a striking landmark.
- Crater Walk: Explore the well-preserved volcanic crater, which is now a grassy bowl perfect for a quiet moment.
- Cornwall Park: The surrounding parkland features historic farm buildings, a café, and roaming sheep and cattle – a slice of countryside within the city.
- Māori History: One Tree Hill was a major pā (fortified settlement) for the Ngāti Whātua iwi, and interpretive signs explain its significance.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours for a relaxed visit. The walk to the summit takes about 15–20 minutes from the car park, but you'll want extra time to soak in the views, explore the crater, and wander through Cornwall Park. Sunrise and sunset are particularly magical times to visit.
