Mount Eden

Rising dramatically from Auckland's inner suburbs, Mount Eden (Maungawhau) is a volcanic cone that offers the city's most iconic views. The grassy summit cradles a deep, perfectly formed crater, and from its rim you can see from the Waitākere Ranges to the Hauraki Gulf. This is where locals come to watch the sunrise or sunset, and where visitors get their bearings of the City of Sails.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1–1.5 hours for the return walk from the car park to the summit and back, plus time to soak in the views. If you're driving, it's a quick 15-minute stop to snap photos from the top, but the walk is well worth it. Combine with a morning or afternoon exploring nearby Mount Eden Village for coffee and boutique shopping.
