Hokitika Gorge

Hokitika Gorge is a jaw-dropping slice of West Coast wilderness, where the turquoise glacial waters of the Hokitika River surge through a narrow cleft in ancient granite. The vivid, almost surreal blue of the water—stained by glacial flour—contrasts brilliantly with the lush rainforest and moss-draped rocks. A short, well-maintained walking track leads to a swingbridge that offers heart-stopping views over the chasm. It's a quick, easy detour from the highway that delivers one of New Zealand’s most photogenic natural wonders.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Set aside 30 to 45 minutes for the short walk and photo stop. If you’re keen to explore the riverbank further or have a picnic, allow 1–1.5 hours. The gorge is a perfect 30-minute detour from State Highway 6, making it an ideal leg-stretcher between Franz Josef and Hokitika.
