Paparoa National Park, on the wild West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, is a dramatic landscape of limestone cliffs, lush rainforest, and the famous Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki. This compact park offers a quintessential West Coast experience: misty walks through nikau palms, the roar of the Tasman Sea in sea caves, and a palpable sense of ancient geology. It’s a must-stop on any West Coast road trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend half a day to a full day exploring the park’s highlights. If you’re passing through on the Great Coast Road, stop for 2–3 hours to see the Pancake Rocks and do one short walk. For a deeper experience, allocate a full day to hike the Pororari River Track and explore the Fox River area. Overnight options are limited – the park has no accommodation, but nearby Punakaiki township offers lodges and a campground.
