Mount Aspiring National Park, part of Te Wāhipounamu – a UNESCO World Heritage site – is a rugged, glacier-carved wilderness in New Zealand's South Island. Dominated by the iconic 3,033-metre peak of Mount Aspiring (Tititea), this park offers some of the country's most dramatic alpine scenery, with pristine rivers, ancient beech forests, and hanging glaciers. It's a paradise for trampers, climbers, and those seeking solitude in nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Aspiring (Tititea): Known as the 'Matterhorn of the South,' this challenging climb rewards experienced mountaineers with breathtaking views. For most visitors, the sight of its pyramidal peak from the valleys is awe-inspiring enough.
- Rob Roy Glacier Track: One of the park's most accessible day hikes, this track leads through beech forest to a stunning viewpoint of the Rob Roy Glacier, with frequent avalanches and waterfalls.
- Matukituki Valley: A gateway to the park, this valley offers spectacular scenery, short walks, and the chance to see the cheeky kea (alpine parrot).
- Routeburn Track: One of New Zealand's Great Walks, this multi-day tramp crosses the park's northern section, passing alpine meadows, lakes, and mountain vistas.
- Gillespie Pass Circuit: A challenging 3–4 day tramp for experienced hikers, combining the Young, Wilkin, and Makarora valleys with stunning alpine passes.
Suggested Time to Spend
For a taste of the park, allocate at least two days: one for the Rob Roy Glacier Track and exploring the Matukituki Valley, and another for a short walk or scenic flight over the glaciers. If you're tackling the Routeburn Track, plan for 3 days (one-way) or 2–3 days for other multi-day tramps. The park is best visited during summer (December–February) when tracks are snow-free, but the shoulder seasons (November and March) offer quieter trails and crisp conditions.
