Twizel

Twizel is a purpose-built town in the Mackenzie Basin, created in the 1960s to house workers for the Upper Waitaki hydroelectric scheme. Today, it's a serene gateway to the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve and a base for exploring the turquoise lakes and alpine scenery of the South Island. With a relaxed vibe, excellent stargazing, and a handful of great cafes, Twizel offers a quieter alternative to nearby tourist hubs.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend one to two nights in Twizel. One full day is enough to explore the highlights: start with morning views at Lake Pukaki, visit High Country Salmon for lunch, then walk the Twizel River Trail in the afternoon. If you're keen on stargazing, book a tour for the evening. With an extra day, consider a side trip to Mount Cook Village or a kayak on Lake Ruataniwha.
