Treble Cone, perched above Lake Wānaka in the Southern Alps, is New Zealand's largest ski area and a mecca for advanced skiers and snowboarders. Its vast, uncrowded terrain, dramatic alpine scenery, and reliable snowfall create an exhilarating backcountry feel within a lift-accessed resort. Beyond winter, the area offers spectacular hiking and photography opportunities, with panoramic views stretching from the lake to the sea.
Highlights & What to See
- Skiing and Snowboarding: Treble Cone is renowned for its steep chutes, wide-open bowls, and long groomed runs. The Saddle Basin offers advanced terrain, while the Home Basin has intermediate and beginner slopes. The resort is famous for its powder stashes and minimal queues.
- Scenic Chairlift Rides: Even non-skiers can take the Summit Chair to the top (1960 m) for breathtaking 360-degree views of Lake Wānaka, Mount Aspiring, and the Tasman Sea. The ride is a highlight in itself.
- Heli-Skiing and Backcountry Access: Treble Cone is a launchpad for heli-skiing adventures into the Harris Mountains. For experienced backcountry skiers, the resort boundary accesses vast unpatrolled terrain.
- Hiking Trails: In summer, the Treble Cone access road leads to the start of several tramping tracks, including the Isthmus Peak Track, which offers stunning alpine views without the crowds of nearby Roy's Peak.
- Photography: The dramatic landscape of jagged peaks, glaciers, and the deep blue lake below makes for incredible photo opportunities, especially at sunrise and sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day skiing or snowboarding, arriving early to make the most of the 45-minute drive from Wānaka. For summer hiking, half a day is sufficient for a short walk, but full-day tramps like Isthmus Peak require 5–7 hours. If you're combining with nearby attractions, allocate at least two days to explore the Wānaka region thoroughly.
