Kaikōura is a dramatic meeting of mountains and sea on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island. The rugged Seaward Kaikōura Range plunges straight into the Pacific, creating a stunning backdrop for a town that's all about marine life, fresh seafood, and outdoor adventure. The 2016 earthquake reshaped parts of the coastline, but Kaikōura has bounced back with new walking tracks and a renewed appreciation for its raw natural beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Whale watching – Kaikōura is one of the best places in the world to see sperm whales year-round. Boat tours, helicopter flights, and even kayak trips offer close encounters with these gentle giants, plus dusky dolphins, fur seals, and albatross.
- Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway – This easy coastal track circles the peninsula, passing seal colonies, limestone rock formations, and layered views of the mountains and ocean. It's especially good at sunset.
- Seal colony at Ohau Point – A short detour north of town, where you can watch New Zealand fur seals lounging on rocks and swimming in the shallows. In summer, pups are often seen.
- Kaikōura Whale Trail – A scenic cycle and walking trail that follows the old railway line along the coast, offering breathtaking views and a chance to spot marine life from land.
- Local seafood – Kaikōura means 'meal of crayfish' in Māori, and you can feast on fresh crayfish (lobster), paua (abalone), and other seafood at roadside stalls or restaurants like the famous Green Dolphin.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least two full days to enjoy the main attractions. Day one: morning whale watching tour, afternoon exploring the peninsula walkway and seal colony. Day two: cycle or drive part of the Whale Trail, visit the local i-SITE for earthquake recovery stories, and indulge in a seafood meal. If you're short on time, a one-day stopover can cover a whale watch and a quick walk, but you'll want more.
