Jackson Bay Township

Jackson Bay Township is a tiny, windswept settlement at the end of the road on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. This is the literal end of State Highway 6, where the Southern Alps meet the Tasman Sea in a dramatic sweep of black sand, driftwood, and moody skies. The bay itself is a working fishing port, and the atmosphere is pure edge-of-the-world – remote, quiet, and achingly beautiful.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Jackson Bay is a destination in itself, but most visitors spend between 1 and 2 hours exploring the beach, jetty, and immediate surrounds. If you’re driving the Haast to Jackson Bay road (a scenic 45-minute drive from Haast), plan for a half-day trip including stops at the Haast River Mouth and the bay. There are no accommodation options in the township itself, so it’s best visited as a day trip from Haast or as a detour on your way south to the glaciers.
