Jackson Bay Township is a tiny, windswept settlement at the end of the road on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. This is the literal end of State Highway 6, where the Southern Alps meet the Tasman Sea in a dramatic sweep of black sand, driftwood, and moody skies. The bay itself is a working fishing port, and the atmosphere is pure edge-of-the-world – remote, quiet, and achingly beautiful.
Highlights & What to See
- The Jetty and Fishing Boats: Walk out onto the historic jetty for views across the bay to the snowy peaks of the Southern Alps. Watch the small fishing fleet unload their catch – often whitebait, crayfish, or blue cod.
- Jackson Bay Beach: A vast, dark-sand beach strewn with driftwood and sea-rounded stones. It’s perfect for a solitary stroll, though swimming is not advised due to strong rips. Look for seals and sea birds.
- Crayfish (Koura) from the Source: At the boat ramp, you can sometimes buy freshly caught crayfish directly from fishermen. There’s no shop, so bring cash and keep an eye out for a handwritten sign.
- Haast River Mouth: A short drive north, where the Haast River meets the sea. It’s a prime spot for whitebaiting and birdwatching, especially during the whitebait season (September–November).
- The End of the Road Feeling: Simply being here is the highlight. The sense of isolation and raw nature is palpable – a perfect place to reflect on the journey along the West Coast.
Suggested Time to Spend
Jackson Bay is a destination in itself, but most visitors spend between 1 and 2 hours exploring the beach, jetty, and immediate surrounds. If you’re driving the Haast to Jackson Bay road (a scenic 45-minute drive from Haast), plan for a half-day trip including stops at the Haast River Mouth and the bay. There are no accommodation options in the township itself, so it’s best visited as a day trip from Haast or as a detour on your way south to the glaciers.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Haast Township: The main service centre for the area, with a petrol station, supermarket, and the Haast Visitor Centre. It’s also the gateway to the Haast Pass.
- Haast Pass / Tioripatea: A stunning alpine highway that crosses the Southern Alps, linking the West Coast to Wanaka and Queenstown. Allow a full day for the drive with stops at waterfalls and short walks.
- Ship Creek: A short walk through dune forest to a wild beach – look for the ‘Lake of the Woods’ and a swing bridge. It’s a great leg-stretcher between Haast and Jackson Bay.
- Knight's Point Lookout: A dramatic viewpoint overlooking the coast, with informative panels about the region’s geology and history. It’s a popular photo stop.
