Karamea is the last true frontier on the West Coast, a tiny settlement where the road ends and the wilderness begins. Surrounded by the Kahurangi National Park and the wild Tasman Sea, this is a place for those who crave solitude, big skies, and untamed nature. The air smells of rainforest and salt, and the silence is broken only by birdsong and crashing waves.
Highlights & What to See
- Oparara Basin Arches – A short walk leads to the stunning Oparara Arch, one of the largest natural arches in the Southern Hemisphere, with crystal-clear streams and ancient mossy forests.
- Honeycomb Hill Caves – Guided tours take you into a labyrinth of limestone caves filled with delicate moa bones and glowworms.
- Kahurangi National Park – The park offers superb tramping, from the Heaphy Track (one of NZ's Great Walks) to day hikes like the Fenian Track.
- Karamea River – Perfect for kayaking, fishing, or simply floating downstream on a hot day.
- Big Rimu Walk – A short loop through ancient podocarp forest, showcasing towering rimu and kahikatea trees.
- Scotts Beach – A wild, black-sand beach with dramatic driftwood and stunning sunsets, just a short walk from town.
Suggested Time to Spend
Karamea is a destination in itself, not a drive-through. Plan at least two full days to explore the Oparara Basin and do a decent walk. If you're tramping the Heaphy Track (which starts/ends here), allow 4–6 days. Most visitors arrive from the south and feel the road-trip tension dissolve as they settle into the slow pace.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Westport – A historic coal-mining town with seal colonies and the Cape Foulwind Walkway, 45 minutes south.
- Nelson – The sunny gateway to Abel Tasman National Park, reachable via the scenic Wangapeka or Hope Saddle routes (allow 3–4 hours).
