Charleston

Charleston is a tiny, historic gold-mining settlement on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, where the wild Tasman Sea meets lush rainforest. Once a booming gold-rush town, today it’s a serene base for exploring the dramatic coastline and limestone karst landscapes. The air smells of salt and damp earth, and the only sounds are crashing waves and native birdsong.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a night or two in Charleston, as it’s small and the main attractions are day walks. A full day is enough to do the Pororari River Track and explore the heritage sites. If you’re a keen caver or want to take a guided tour of the Fox River Caves, allow an extra half-day. The town itself can be seen in an hour.
