Castle Hill

Castle Hill, a surreal landscape of limestone boulders scattered across a grassy basin, feels like a natural sculpture park set against the dramatic backdrop of the Southern Alps. Located on the Great Alpine Highway between Christchurch and the West Coast, this otherworldly site has long been a spiritual place for the local Ngāi Tahu people and a magnet for climbers and photographers. The rock formations, some as large as houses, glow golden at sunrise and sunset, creating an almost mystical atmosphere.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours exploring the boulder field and taking photos. If you're a climber, plan for a half-day to tackle some of the classic bouldering problems. Castle Hill is a perfect 30-minute detour off SH73, so it's easy to fit into a day's drive between Arthur's Pass and the West Coast.
