Oban

Oban is the sole settlement on Stewart Island / Rakiura, New Zealand's third-largest island. This tiny, windswept town is the gateway to some of the country's most pristine wilderness, where native birds outnumber people and the pace of life is dictated by the tides. With a population of around 300, Oban feels like a remote outpost, but its handful of cafes, galleries, and a pub offer warm Kiwi hospitality. The real draw is the surrounding Rakiura National Park, a haven for trampers, birdwatchers, and those seeking solitude.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Oban deserves at least two to three days to fully immerse yourself in its wild beauty. If you're short on time, a day trip from Invercargill via plane or ferry is possible but feels rushed. For trampers, allocate three nights for the Rakiura Track or combine a few days of day walks and wildlife tours. The island's weather is notoriously changeable, so build in flexibility.
