Lewis Pass
Lewis Pass is one of New Zealand's most scenic alpine crossings, connecting the West Coast to Canterbury via State Highway 7. This rugged route, named after explorer Henry Lewis, offers a wild and remote journey through beech forests, tussock-covered valleys, and dramatic mountain landscapes. It's a quieter alternative to Arthur's Pass, with fewer crowds and a raw, untamed feel that rewards adventurous travellers.
Highlights & What to See
- Marble Hill Scenic Reserve: A short walk through ancient beech forest leads to a serene riverside spot – perfect for a picnic or a quick stretch.
- Lewis Pass Hot Springs: Natural thermal pools nestled in the bush, ideal for a soothing soak after a long drive. The water is warm but not scalding, and the setting is wonderfully peaceful.
- Lake Daniell: A picturesque alpine lake accessible via a 1.5-hour walk through mossy forest. The trail is well-maintained and offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks.
- Alpine Flora and Birdlife: Keep an eye out for kea, the cheeky alpine parrot, and the vibrant flowers of the flax and hebe during summer.
- Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre: Not a tourist attraction per se, but the area around it offers excellent short walks and a glimpse into local outdoor culture.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers drive through Lewis Pass in a day, but to truly appreciate the area, plan for at least half a day to include a short walk and a soak at the hot springs. If you're keen on hiking, consider an overnight stay at one of the DOC huts or the Lake Daniell Lodge. The pass is often done as part of a larger loop from Christchurch to the West Coast, so budget a full day for the drive with stops.
