Perched on a rugged headland where the Tasman Sea meets the wild West Coast, Knight Point Lighthouse is a classic New Zealand roadside stop that rewards you with big views and a sense of isolation. The short walk from the carpark leads to a historic lighthouse that has guided ships since the 1870s, and on a clear day you can see all the way to the Southern Alps. It’s a place where the roar of the ocean and the wind in the flax bushes remind you that you’re on the edge of the world.
Highlights & What to See
- The Lighthouse: Climb the gentle slope to the restored wooden lighthouse – it’s one of the few remaining of its kind on the West Coast, and its white tower against the blue-green ocean is a photographer’s dream.
- Coastal Views: Scan the horizon for dolphins, seals, and seabirds. The lookout platforms offer sweeping panoramas of the Haast coastline and, on a calm day, you might spot the peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park.
- Interpretive Panels: Learn about the area’s maritime history, including the wreck of the SS Haast and the lives of the lighthouse keepers who once lived here.
- Short Nature Walk: A 10-minute loop track through coastal scrub and flax gives you a taste of the local flora and more angles on the rugged shoreline.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 20–40 minutes here – enough to walk up to the lighthouse, take in the views, and read the history panels. It’s a perfect leg-stretcher on a drive along the Haast Highway. If you’re a keen photographer or birdwatcher, allow an hour to wait for the best light or to spot wildlife.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Haast Township: Just 10 minutes north, it’s the main service centre for the region, with cafes, a pub, and the Haast Visitor Centre – great for a coffee or to check road conditions.
- Haast River: A short detour leads to the Haast River Bridge, where you can watch jet boats or try whitebait fishing in season.
- Ship Creek: A 15-minute drive south, this coastal walk takes you through dune lakes and a kahikatea swamp forest – a stunning contrast to the lighthouse’s exposed headland.
- Jackson Bay: The end of the road, 30 minutes south, where you’ll find a tiny fishing settlement, a jetty, and the famous Cray Pot seafood truck (check if it’s open).
