Twizel is a small town in the Mackenzie Country, surrounded by turquoise canals, braided rivers, and dramatic mountain scenery. Originally a construction town for the Upper Waitaki hydroelectric scheme, it now serves as a gateway to Aoraki/Mount Cook and the southern lakes. With its dry climate and dark skies, it's a haven for stargazers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Highlights & What to See
- Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park – Just 50 minutes away, home to New Zealand's highest peak and the Tasman Glacier, with walks like the Hooker Valley Track.
- Lake Pukaki – Its milky turquoise waters, fed by glacial flour, offer iconic views of Aoraki/Mount Cook. Stop at the lookout on State Highway 80.
- Twizel River & Canals – Excellent for fly fishing (trout) and kayaking; the canals are also popular for salmon fishing.
- Dark Sky Reserve – Twizel lies within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. Join a stargazing tour or simply look up on a clear night.
- Ben Ohau Range walks – Hike the Ben Ohau Track or the more challenging Birchwood Loop for panoramic alpine views.
- High Country Salmon – A working salmon farm where you can feed the fish and buy fresh salmon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Twizel itself is compact, but the surrounding attractions demand at least one full day. For a relaxed pace, allow two nights: one day for Aoraki/Mount Cook and one for local walks and stargazing. If you're passing through, a half-day stop for a Lake Pukaki viewpoint and a salmon lunch is worthwhile.
