Greymouth, the largest town on the West Coast, is a gritty, authentic gateway to wild beaches, coal mines, and the stunning Pancake Rocks. The town centre, compact and walkable, offers a genuine slice of Kiwi life with historic pubs, local art galleries, and the mighty Grey River flowing through it. It's a perfect stop for a coffee, a seafood chowder, and a dose of West Coast hospitality before heading south to glaciers or north to the Paparoa National Park.
Highlights & What to See
- Brunner Mine Site: A historic coal-mining site with a moving memorial and easy walks along the Grey River.
- Left Bank Art Gallery: Housed in a former bank, this gallery showcases local and national contemporary art, often with a West Coast flavour.
- Monteith's Brewing Co: Take a brewery tour and sample the famous craft beers in the heritage-listed building.
- Greymouth i-SITE & History House: Pick up maps and learn about the region's Māori and European history.
- Grey River Walkway: A paved path along the river, perfect for a stroll or cycle to the breakwater and Cobden Bridge.
- Shantytown Heritage Park: A living-history museum 10 minutes south, recreating a 1860s gold-rush town with train rides and gold panning.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to explore the town centre, visit the breweries and galleries, and walk the riverbank. Most travellers use Greymouth as a lunch or overnight stop on the journey between Christchurch (via Arthur's Pass) and the glaciers. If you plan to visit Shantytown or do the Paparoa Track, allow a full day.
