Greymouth, the largest town on the West Coast, is a gritty, authentic gateway to the region's wild beauty. Set at the mouth of the Grey River, this former gold-mining and coal-exporting hub has a raw, working-class charm. The town's recent revival includes a craft beer scene, a cracking little museum, and easy access to the rugged coastline and rainforest. It's a perfect base for exploring the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, the glaciers, or the Heaphy Track.
Highlights & What to See
- Brunner Mine Site: A historic gold and coal mining site with a moving memorial to the 1896 explosion that killed 65 miners. The industrial ruins and interpretive panels tell a powerful story.
- Left Bank Art Gallery: Housed in the former Bank of New Zealand building, this gallery showcases contemporary New Zealand art and pounamu (greenstone) carvings.
- Monteith's Brewery: Take a tour of the iconic West Coast brewery, sample their award-winning beers, and enjoy a hearty meal in the brewpub.
- Greymouth River Walkway: A pleasant stroll along the Grey River, with views of the railway bridge and the chance to spot whitebaiters in season.
- Shantytown Heritage Park: A living-history museum 10km south of town, where you can pan for gold, ride a steam train, and explore a recreated 1860s gold-mining settlement.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a night or two in Greymouth to break up the drive between the glaciers and the top of the South Island. A full day is enough to see the town's key sights: start with the Brunner Mine Site in the morning, then explore Shantytown or the Left Bank Gallery after lunch, and finish with a brewery tour. If you're hiking the Heaphy Track or heading to Paparoa National Park, add an extra day.
