Lake Hawea Track

Stretching along the shimmering turquoise edge of Lake Hāwea, this track offers a sublime walking or biking experience framed by the dramatic peaks of the Southern Alps. It’s a quieter alternative to the more famous Wanaka trails, with ever-changing lake views, pockets of native beech forest, and the chance to spot black swans gliding across the water. The track is well-formed and mostly flat, making it accessible for most fitness levels while still delivering that raw, high-country beauty.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow half a day to fully enjoy the track. Walkers can complete the main section (one way) in about 2–3 hours, while cyclists will zip through in 1–2 hours. Add extra time for swimming in summer, photography stops, or a leisurely lunch by the lake. If you’re combining it with other activities in the Wanaka region, a morning or afternoon slot works perfectly.
