Lake Dunstan Trail is a world-class cycling and walking track in Central Otago, hugging the turquoise shores of Lake Dunstan. Carved into schist cliffs and crossing dramatic viaducts, this 55-km trail offers jaw-dropping views of the lake, vineyards, and the distant Pisa Range. It's a must-do for active travellers seeking a quintessential New Zealand bikepacking or day-ride experience.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most cyclists ride the full 55 km point-to-point in 4–5 hours (Cromwell to Clyde or reverse), allowing time for photos and breaks. For a more leisurely experience, split it over two days with an overnight in Clyde – the trail is well-graded and suitable for intermediate fitness levels. Walkers can tackle shorter sections, like the 7-km loop from Bannockburn to the viaduct. Book a shuttle or arrange car relocation if you don't want to ride back.
