Key Summit Track is one of the most rewarding day hikes in Fiordland National Park, offering a stunning alpine walk with panoramic views over glacial valleys, pristine lakes, and the rugged Darran Mountains. Starting from the famous Routeburn Track trailhead, this track climbs steadily through ancient beech forest before emerging onto a tussock-covered summit plateau, where you'll find a boardwalk loop leading to breathtaking viewpoints. It's a classic New Zealand alpine experience that's accessible to reasonably fit walkers.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit panorama: 360-degree views of the Hollyford Valley, Lake Marian, and the Humboldt Mountains – a photographer's dream.
- Alpine boardwalk: A unique walk through subalpine vegetation, including cushion plants and snow tussocks, with informative panels about the local ecology.
- Routeburn Track connection: The first section of the track follows part of the iconic Routeburn Track, giving you a taste of this Great Walk.
- Lake Marian viewpoint: From the summit, look down into the hanging valley holding Lake Marian, a brilliant turquoise gem.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for kea (alpine parrots) and South Island robins in the forest section.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 5–6 hours return for the full hike (about 7 km one way, 500 m elevation gain). Most walkers start early in the morning to enjoy the summit in clear light and avoid afternoon cloud buildup. The track is well-graded but steep in places, so bring plenty of water, sun protection, and layers for changing weather. If you're short on time, you can still enjoy the lower beech forest sections in a couple of hours, but the summit is the main reward.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Routeburn Track: If you have more time, consider a multi-day guided or independent walk on this Great Walk, which connects to Key Summit Track.
- Queenstown: A 2-hour drive east, with adventure activities, wineries, and the Remarkables mountain range.
- Glenorchy: A charming lakeside village with easy walks and stunning mountain views, en route to Queenstown.
