Waitaki Valley

Flanked by the Southern Alps and the Pacific, the Waitaki Valley is a sun-drenched landscape of limestone outcrops, braided rivers, and a rich Māori and early settler history. This is a region where you can explore ancient rock art, sample award-winning wines, and stand beneath the stars in one of the world's largest dark-sky reserves. The valley's quiet roads and small settlements make it a perfect detour on a South Island road trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two to three days is ideal to explore the Waitaki Valley properly. Spend the first day visiting the rock art sites and the Vanished World Centre, then tackle the Elephant Rocks and Ōmarama hot springs. On day two, drive the scenic route towards Oamaru, stopping at wineries and the Geopark visitor centre. If you're cycling or walking the Alps 2 Ocean trail, budget an extra day per section.
