Lace up your boots for one of New Zealand's finest multi-day tramps, the Travers Sabine Circuit, a 70–80 km loop that threads through the heart of Nelson Lakes National Park. This is pure South Island backcountry: beech forests, alpine meadows, crystal-clear rivers, and the shimmering lakes Rotoroa and Rotoiti. The circuit rewards with remote huts, panoramic passes, and a genuine sense of wilderness that feels a world away from the tourist trail.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Rotoroa & the Sabine Valley: Start or end at this serene lake, then follow the Sabine River through ancient red beech forest, crossing swing bridges and spotting native birds like the tomtit and robin.
- Travers Saddle: The circuit's high point at 1,787 m offers jaw-dropping views over the park's jagged peaks and down to Lake Rotoiti — a classic alpine crossing.
- Lake Rotoiti & the Travers Valley: Descend through subalpine scrub to the lake's turquoise waters, with optional side trips to the scenic Whisky Falls or St. Arnaud village.
- Backcountry Huts: Stay in well-maintained DOC huts like Sabine, West Sabine, and Upper Travers, each with its own character and mountain backdrop.
- Wildlife Encounters: Keep an eye out for the inquisitive kea, and in the river valleys, the rare whio (blue duck).
Suggested Time to Spend
Most trampers complete the circuit in 4–5 days, allowing time for side trips and hut stays. A typical itinerary: Day 1 from Lake Rotoroa to Sabine Hut (3–4 hrs), Day 2 to West Sabine Hut (5–6 hrs), Day 3 over Travers Saddle to Upper Travers Hut (6–7 hrs), Day 4 to Lake Rotoiti (5–6 hrs). Fit walkers can do it in 3 days, but the pace is relentless. Add an extra day for exploring Lake Rotoiti or the Angelus Basin.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Nelson Lakes National Park: The park itself offers shorter walks, kayaking on Lake Rotoiti, and the stunning Angelus Hut track.
- Abel Tasman National Park: A 2-hour drive north, this coastal paradise is perfect for a relaxing beach and kayaking contrast to the alpine circuit.
- Kaikōura: About 3 hours east, famous for whale watching, seal colonies, and the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway.
- Marlborough Wine Region: A detour to Blenheim for wine tasting and the Queen Charlotte Track offers a refined end to a rugged trip.
