Lake Wombat is a serene alpine tarn nestled in a hanging valley above Franz Josef Glacier, offering one of the most rewarding short hikes in the region. The walk leads you through lush rainforest and across a swingbridge before climbing to this mirror-like lake, where the glacier's terminal face is framed by steep valley walls. It's a peaceful spot for a picnic or a moment of quiet contemplation, with the constant rumble of icefall echoing from above.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the return walk from the Franz Josef Glacier car park. The track is well-formed and suitable for most fitness levels, though there are some steps. It's best done in the morning for calm reflections or late afternoon for golden light on the ice. If you're short on time, this is the quickest way to get an up-close glacier view without a guided tour.
