Stretching 55 kilometres along the dramatic shores of Lake Dunstan in Central Otago, the Dunstan Trail is a world-class cycling and walking route that weaves through historic gold-mining country, rocky gorges, and vineyard-studded valleys. Carved into cliffs high above the turquoise lake, this trail offers jaw-dropping views at every turn, with tunnels, viaducts, and remnants of the region's gold-rush past adding a sense of discovery. Whether you're on two wheels or on foot, the trail's well-graded surface and gentle gradients make it accessible to most fitness levels, while the ever-changing landscape — from arid schist outcrops to lush riverbanks — keeps the journey fresh.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most cyclists take a full day (4–6 hours) to ride the entire trail one-way, starting from Clyde and finishing in Cromwell, or vice versa. If you're short on time, the 15-kilometre section between Clyde and the Cairnmuir Viaduct is the most rewarding half-day ride. Walkers can tackle shorter segments, such as the easy 5-kilometre path from Clyde to the first tunnel, which offers a taste of the scenery without the full commitment. Allow an extra hour at either end to explore the historic towns and grab a coffee or wine.
