Winding through dramatic landscapes of rugged mountains, turquoise rivers, and historic gold-mining towns, the Central Otago Wine Trail is New Zealand’s southernmost wine region and a must for any oenophile exploring the South Island. This isn’t just a tasting tour; it’s a journey through a landscape of stark beauty where world-class pinot noir, aromatic whites, and cool-climate wines thrive in the rain shadow of the Southern Alps. The region’s boutique cellar doors, many with stunning vineyard views, offer intimate encounters with passionate winemakers.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Devote at least two full days to explore the trail properly – one for the Gibbston/Queenstown area and another for Bannockburn/Cromwell/Wanaka. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Queenstown can cover a handful of top wineries, but you’ll miss the region’s full breadth. For a relaxed pace, base yourself in Cromwell or Wanaka and drive between cellar doors, allowing 30–45 minutes per tasting. Cyclists can tackle the Lake Dunstan Trail in a day with wine stops.
