The Cascade Saddle Track is a challenging alpine tramping route that links the Matukituki and Dart valleys, offering some of the most dramatic and remote scenery in Mount Aspiring National Park. This track is not for the faint-hearted — it demands fitness, navigation skills, and a head for heights — but rewards with jaw-dropping views of glaciers, waterfalls, and the iconic Mount Aspiring itself.
Highlights & What to See
- Matukituki Valley: The track begins in this stunning valley, with lush beech forest and braided rivers setting the scene.
- Cascade Saddle: The high point of the track, offering panoramic views of the Dart Glacier, Mount Aspiring, and the surrounding peaks.
- Dart Valley: Descend into this wild valley, with its glacier-fed river and remote huts like the Dart Hut.
- Mount Aspiring: New Zealand's most photographed peak looms large, especially from the saddle.
- Alpine Flora: Look for mountain daisies, snowberries, and other hardy plants that cling to the rocky slopes.
- Birdlife: Kea, New Zealand's alpine parrot, may be spotted — but don't feed them.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most trampers allow 2–3 days to complete the Cascade Saddle Track, typically starting from the Matukituki Valley and finishing at the Dart River (or vice versa). A common itinerary involves staying at Liverpool Hut or Dart Hut overnight. Day walks are not recommended due to the length and difficulty; the full traverse is a serious multi-day commitment requiring backcountry experience and proper gear.
