Stretching 85 kilometres through the remote wilderness of the West Coast, the Old Ghost Road is New Zealand's ultimate multi-day mountain-bike and hiking adventure. Carved along an abandoned gold-mining route, this epic trail weaves through ancient podocarp forests, across exposed ridgelines, and past relics of the region's gold-rush past. With its dramatic scenery, challenging terrain, and a palpable sense of isolation, the Old Ghost Road offers an unforgettable journey for those seeking a true backcountry experience.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most people tackle the Old Ghost Road over 2–3 days, either biking or hiking. For mountain bikers, an ambitious one-day push is possible for fit riders, but two days allows time to soak in the views and enjoy the huts. Hikers typically allow three days, staying at the well-equipped huts (book in advance). The trail runs one-way from Seddonville to Lyell (or vice versa), so factor in a shuttle or vehicle relocation. Start early each day to avoid afternoon weather changes on the exposed tops.
