Perched high above the Hooker Valley in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, Mueller Hut is one of New Zealand's most iconic alpine huts. This rugged red shelter offers jaw-dropping views of the surrounding peaks, including Aoraki/Mount Cook, and is a bucket-list destination for hikers seeking a true backcountry experience. The journey to the hut is a challenging but rewarding climb, with switchbacks and rocky terrain leading to a perch at 1,800 metres where the vastness of the Southern Alps unfolds.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors tackle the Mueller Hut as a two-day trip: a full day to hike up (4–6 hours), spend the night in the hut, and a second day to descend (3–4 hours) and explore the Hooker Valley Track. If you're very fit and acclimatised, a long day hike is possible but not recommended due to the altitude and exposure. Book your hut spot well in advance through the Department of Conservation (DOC) during peak season.
