Bluff may be a small fishing town at the southern tip of the South Island, but its reputation looms large. It's the gateway to Stewart Island and the start (or end) of the legendary Te Araroa Trail. The air is salty, the wind is brisk, and the views across Foveaux Strait are wild and endless. This is a place where you come for the freshest oysters in New Zealand, the feeling of being at the edge of the world, and the raw coastal beauty that defines the Deep South.
Highlights & What to See
- Bluff Oysters: From March to August, these plump, briny bivalves are the star. Head to the local seafood shop or the annual Bluff Oyster & Food Festival (if you're lucky with timing).
- Stirling Point: The southern terminus of State Highway 1 and the Te Araroa Trail. Snap a photo with the iconic signpost and gaze out over the strait.
- Bluff Maritime Museum: A small but fascinating museum that dives into the town's whaling, shipping, and oyster-fishing history.
- Foveaux Walkway: A 4.5 km coastal track that winds from Stirling Point around the Bluff peninsula, offering dramatic sea cliffs, birdlife, and views of Stewart Island.
- Bluff Hill Lookout: Drive or hike up for panoramic views of the harbour, the port, and on a clear day, the snowy peaks of Fiordland.
Suggested Time to Spend
Bluff is a quick stop—half a day is plenty to see the highlights, eat oysters, and walk a section of the Foveaux Walkway. If you're catching the ferry to Stewart Island, you'll pass through anyway. Most visitors use it as a lunch break or an overnight stop before heading further south or north.
