Whanganui, a historic river city on New Zealand's North Island, offers a rich blend of art, heritage, and outdoor adventure. The mighty Whanganui River, one of the country's longest, shapes the town's identity, providing a scenic backdrop for kayaking, jet boating, and riverside walks. With a vibrant arts scene, from street art to glassblowing studios, and a deep Māori cultural heritage, Whanganui feels like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
Highlights & What to See
- Whanganui River – The lifeblood of the region, best explored by kayak, canoe, or jet boat. The Whanganui Journey is one of New Zealand's Great Walks, but you can also do a day trip on the river.
- Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua – A stunning heritage building housing an impressive collection of New Zealand art, with a new wing opening soon.
- Durie Hill Elevator & Tower – Ride the historic elevator up to the hill for panoramic views over the city and river; don't miss the war memorial tower.
- Whanganui Regional Museum – Dive into the area's natural and cultural history, including a significant Māori taonga collection.
- Virginia Lake & Kai Iwi Beach – A beautiful lake with walking tracks, native birds, and a winter garden; nearby Kai Iwi Beach is great for a coastal stroll.
- Bridge to Nowhere – A surreal relic from early 20th-century road-building ambitions, accessible by jet boat or kayak up the Whanganui River.
- New Plymouth – While not in Whanganui, this nearby city is worth a visit for its Len Lye Centre and coastal walkway (see Nearby Areas).
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to soak up Whanganui's highlights. Spend your first day exploring the city's museums and galleries, then take a river trip on day two. If you're a keen hiker or kayaker, add a third day for a longer river journey or a walk in the nearby hills. Whanganui works well as a stopover between Wellington and New Plymouth or Tongariro National Park.
