Waitomo Caves

Deep in the heart of New Zealand's North Island, the Waitomo Caves region is a subterranean wonderland of limestone labyrinths, glowworm-studded grottoes, and thundering underground rivers. This is one of the country's most surreal and magical experiences, where you can float silently beneath a canopy of tiny living lights or abseil into the darkness for a true adventure. The name Waitomo comes from the Māori words wai (water) and tomo (hole or shaft), and the caves have been a sacred and significant place for local iwi for centuries. Today, they offer an unforgettable journey into the earth's hidden depths.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a full day in the Waitomo area, which is enough time to do one cave tour (around 45 minutes to 2.5 hours) and perhaps a second activity like black water rafting (3–4 hours) or a walk. If you're combining with nearby attractions, half a day can work for a single cave visit, but to truly soak in the atmosphere and maybe try two different caves or an adventure activity, plan for a full day. Overnight stays are limited but possible – consider a farmstay or lodge to experience the peaceful rural setting after the crowds leave.
