Te Rewai Beach
Te Rewai Beach is a wild and windswept stretch of black sand on the Taranaki coast, where the Tasman Sea pounds the shore and the brooding silhouette of Mount Taranaki looms inland. This is not a swimming beach — the rips are fierce — but it's a place of raw, elemental beauty, perfect for solitary walks, storm watching, and feeling the full force of nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Black Sand Beach: The iron-rich volcanic sand gives the beach its dramatic colour, contrasting with white-tipped waves and the green bush of the Egmont National Park backdrop.
- Mount Taranaki Views: On clear days, the symmetrical cone of the mountain dominates the skyline, often with a lenticular cloud cap. Sunrise and sunset are spectacular here.
- Surfing and Bodyboarding: Experienced surfers tackle the powerful breaks — watch from a safe distance or join a local surf school in New Plymouth.
- Driftwood and Shells: The beach is littered with sculptural driftwood and paua shells; it's a photographer's dream at golden hour.
- Nearby Walkways: The Te Rewai Walkway follows the coast north towards Oakura, passing tide pools and sea caves. Check tide times before setting out.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1–2 hours if you're just stopping for a walk and photos. Combine with a visit to Oakura (5 minutes north) for a coffee or lunch, making a half-day trip from New Plymouth. If you're a surfer or keen photographer, you could easily spend a full morning here catching waves or waiting for the perfect light.
