Stretching 150 kilometres through the rugged heart of Otago, the Otago Central Rail Trail is New Zealand’s premier cycling and walking route, following an abandoned railway line from Clyde to Middlemarch. This gentle, well-graded trail winds through historic gold-mining towns, over viaducts, and through dramatic landscapes of tawny tussock hills and rocky gorges. It’s a journey into the region’s pioneering past, with plenty of opportunities to stop for a coffee, explore old railway stations, or simply soak up the vast skies and silence.
Highlights & What to See
- Cycle or walk the entire trail – Tackle the full 150 km over 4–6 days, or choose shorter sections for a day trip. The crushed-gravel surface is easy on bikes and feet.
- Historic railway structures – Marvel at the Poolburn Viaduct, the longest on the trail, and the dramatic 80-metre-high Manuherikia River Bridge.
- Gold-rush towns – Stop at charming settlements like Ranfurly, Naseby, and Omakau, where heritage hotels and cafes offer warm hospitality.
- Wildlife and scenery – Spot hawks, rabbits, and the occasional hare against a backdrop of the Ida and Rock and Pillar ranges.
- Ghostly tunnels – Pedal through several dark, cool tunnels, including the 1.5 km-long Tunnel at Hyde, which adds a touch of adventure.
Suggested Time to Spend
For the full experience, allow 4–6 days to cycle the entire trail, staying overnight in historic pubs or B&Bs along the way. If you’re short on time, a half-day or full-day ride from either Clyde or Middlemarch gives you a taste of the trail’s best scenery. Walkers can tackle shorter sections as day hikes. Most people find the trail most enjoyable in spring (October–November) or autumn (March–April) when the weather is mild and the colours are vibrant.
