Trotters Gorge

Just a short drive inland from the coastal town of Oamaru, Trotters Gorge is a pocket of ancient native bush that feels a world away from the surrounding farmland. The lush, fern-lined gorge is carved by the Kakanui River, and its walking trails lead you through remnants of original podocarp forest, past limestone bluffs and clear, cool swimming holes. It's a serene spot for a picnic, a short bushwalk, or a refreshing dip on a hot day.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here, enough for the loop track and a swim. If you're combining it with a visit to Oamaru's penguin colony or Victorian precinct, allocate a half-day to include the gorge as a peaceful nature break. The track is short enough for a quick stop, but the setting invites you to linger.
