Te Anau is the gateway to Fiordland National Park and the starting point for most journeys to Milford Sound. Set on the shores of Lake Te Anau, New Zealand's second-largest lake, this laid-back town offers stunning mountain views, a relaxed lakeside atmosphere, and access to some of the country's most iconic wilderness experiences. With a compact town centre, excellent walking trails, and a handful of great cafes, it's the perfect base for exploring the fiords and the dramatic landscapes of the Deep South.
Highlights & What to See
- Milford Sound – A world-famous fiord with towering cliffs, waterfalls, and wildlife; accessible by scenic drive or cruise from Te Anau.
- Lake Te Anau – Perfect for kayaking, boat cruises, or a peaceful lakeside stroll; the views of the Murchison Mountains are breathtaking.
- Te Anau Glowworm Caves – A guided boat tour into limestone caves illuminated by thousands of glowworms, on the western shore of the lake.
- Kepler Track – One of New Zealand's Great Walks, a 60 km loop offering alpine views, beech forest, and lake vistas; day walks also possible.

Suggested Time to Spend
Te Anau itself can be explored in a day, but most visitors stay 2–3 nights to allow for a full-day trip to Milford Sound (including the scenic drive) and a half-day for the glowworm caves or a walk on the Kepler Track. If you're planning to tackle the full Kepler Track, budget 3–4 days. For a relaxed pace, add an extra day to enjoy the lake and local dining scene.
