Slope Point

Slope Point is the southernmost point of New Zealand's South Island, a wild and windswept headland on the Catlins coast. Here, the relentless Southern Ocean winds have sculpted the trees into surreal, horizontal shapes, creating a landscape that feels like the edge of the world. A short walk across farmland leads to a lonely signpost showing distances to the equator and the South Pole, and to dramatic cliffs where sea lions often bask below. This is a place of raw, elemental beauty that rewards those who brave the elements.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for about 30 minutes to an hour at Slope Point itself, including the 20-minute walk from the car park and time to take in the views. It's a quick stop best combined with other Catlins attractions, so half a day is ample for the area. Visit on a clear day for the best visibility, but be prepared for strong winds and changeable weather at any time.
