Owaka is a small, unpretentious settlement in the Catlins region of coastal South Otago, New Zealand. Its name is a Māori word meaning 'the place of the canoe,' referencing a local legend about a stranded waka (canoe). The town is the main service centre for the Catlins and offers a genuine slice of rural Kiwi life, with a friendly pub, a historic hotel, and a fascinating museum. Owaka is the perfect base for exploring the wild coastline, ancient forests, and unique wildlife of the Catlins – think sea lions, penguins, and podocarp rainforests.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Owaka itself can be explored in a couple of hours – enough time to browse the museum and grab a coffee. However, the surrounding Catlins attractions deserve at least two full days to appreciate the diverse landscapes and wildlife. If you're self-driving, plan a loop from Owaka to the coast and back, taking in the waterfalls, caves, and viewpoints. For a relaxed pace, stay overnight in Owaka or nearby Papatowai.
