Moeraki is a sleepy fishing village on the Otago coast, best known for the otherworldly Moeraki Boulders that dot the beach like giant turtle eggs. This is a place where time slows down—the main street has a pub, a fish-and-chip shop, and a wharf where you can watch fishermen unload their catch. The boulders are the headliner, but the real draw is the raw, windswept beauty of the coastline and the chance to see yellow-eyed penguins and fur seals in their natural habitat.
Highlights & What to See
- Moeraki Boulders – Huge spherical concretions scattered along Koekohe Beach, best photographed at sunrise or low tide when the sand is firm and the light is golden.
- Moeraki Lighthouse Walk – A short coastal track from the village to the lighthouse, offering sweeping views and good spots to spot seals and seabirds.
- Yellow-Eyed Penguin Colony – Viewing hides near the lighthouse let you watch these rare birds come ashore at dusk (keep quiet and stay behind the barriers).
- Fishing & Seafood – The Moeraki Tavern serves legendary whitebait fritters and fresh blue cod; grab a table on the deck overlooking the harbour.
- Moeraki Village Beach – Less crowded than the boulder beach, this stretch of sand is perfect for a quiet stroll and rock-pooling.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at the boulders and then move on, but Moeraki rewards a half-day or even an overnight stop. Arrive in the late afternoon to see the boulders in low-angle light, then stay for sunset at the penguin colony. If you’re self-driving the coastal route from Dunedin to Oamaru, budget at least 3 hours to do the main sights justice.
