Roxburgh Gorge Trail
Winding through the rugged, sun-scorched landscape of Central Otago, the Roxburgh Gorge Trail is a 14 km (one way) cycling and walking track that follows the sparkling Clutha River Mata-Au from Alexandra to the historic Roxburgh Dam. This trail is a highlight of the Otago Central Rail Trail network, offering a mix of gold-mining history, dramatic schist rock formations, and tranquil river scenery. The trail is well-graded and mostly flat, making it accessible to cyclists of all levels, and the sense of isolation is profound as you pedal through the narrow gorge, past remnants of old water races and tunnels.
Highlights & What to See
- The Clutha River Mata-Au: The trail hugs this mighty river, with shimmering turquoise waters contrasting against the arid, golden hills. Look out for the dramatic cliffs and the historic 19th-century mining tunnels.
- Roxburgh Dam: The endpoint of the trail, this hydroelectric dam is an impressive piece of engineering. The visitor centre offers insights into the region's power generation and history.
- Historic Gold Mining Relics: The gorge was a hive of activity during the Otago gold rush. You'll pass old water races, sluicings, and the remains of miners' huts, with informative panels along the way.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for native birds like tūī, fantails, and the occasional black-backed gull. The river is also home to trout and salmon.
- Alexandra: The trailhead is in this charming town, known for its fruit-growing heritage and the striking Clock Tower. It's worth spending time exploring the local cafes and the Central Otago Wine Region.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors cycle the Roxburgh Gorge Trail in a half-day (3-4 hours), but you can easily stretch it into a full day by stopping for picnics, swimming, or exploring side tracks. The trail is 14 km one way, so you'll need to arrange a shuttle or cycle back (the return is uphill in places). For a relaxed pace, start in the morning, take a break at the dam, and cycle back in the afternoon. If you're combining it with the Otago Central Rail Trail, allow an extra day to fully appreciate the gorge.
