Plummeting 43 metres towards the turquoise waters of the Kawarau River, the Kawarau Gorge Bungy Centre is where modern bungy jumping was born. Since AJ Hackett launched the world's first commercial bungy jump here in 1988, this iconic site has drawn thrill-seekers from across the globe. The historic suspension bridge, originally built in 1880, provides the perfect platform for a heart-thumping leap. Even if you're not jumping, the energy of the gorge — with its rocky cliffs and rushing river — is electric, and the viewing platform offers front-row seats to the action.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for about 1–2 hours if you're just watching or doing a single jump. If you're jumping, allow extra time for check-in, suiting up, and the adrenaline recovery. The centre is easily visited as a half-day trip from Queenstown, leaving the rest of the day for other activities.
