Milford Sound is the crown jewel of Fiordland National Park, a dramatic fiord carved by glaciers where towering cliffs plunge into dark, mirror-like waters and waterfalls cascade hundreds of metres. The journey here—whether by road through the Homer Tunnel or by scenic flight—is as memorable as the destination itself. Rain or shine, the sheer scale and raw beauty of this place will leave you awestruck.
Highlights & What to See
- Cruise the fiord – The best way to experience Milford Sound is by boat, gliding past Mitre Peak, Stirling Falls, and Bowen Falls. Keep an eye out for seals, dolphins, and penguins.
- Kayak in the fiord – For a more intimate experience, paddle silently among the cliffs and waterfalls, feeling the spray on your face.
- Milford Track – If you have time, hike a section of New Zealand’s most famous multi-day walk, which ends at Sandfly Point near the fiord.
- Scenic flights – A flight from Queenstown or Te Anau offers jaw-dropping aerial views of the fiord, snow-capped peaks, and pristine wilderness.
- Underwater Observatory – Descend into the deep to see black coral and unique marine life found only in these dark, tannin-stained waters.
- Key Summit Track – A short but steep hike near the Homer Tunnel that rewards with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day on a cruise and coach tour from Queenstown (about 12 hours round trip). To truly appreciate the fiord’s changing moods, consider an overnight cruise or stay in Te Anau and drive in for a day. If you’re short on time, a half-day cruise from the Milford Sound wharf is sufficient, but allow at least 2–3 hours for the boat trip itself.
