Cromwell, a sun-baked town at the junction of the Kawarau and Clutha Rivers, is the gateway to Central Otago's wine country and a launchpad for adventures in the surrounding gorges. Once a gold-rush hub, it has reinvented itself as a foodie destination, with stone fruit orchards, vineyards, and a revitalised historic precinct that tells tales of its pioneering past.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least half a day to explore Old Cromwell and a couple of wineries. If you're keen on cycling the Lake Dunstan Trail, plan a full day. Cromwell also works well as an overnight stop, allowing you to enjoy a relaxed dinner at a vineyard restaurant before heading deeper into Otago.
